Vice Presidential Election Set For 9 September; ECI Releases Full Schedule

The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Friday released the timeline for the 17th Vice Presidential election, confirming that voting will take place on 9 September.

The election comes in the wake of a formal notification from the Ministry of Home Affairs on 22 July, declaring the Vice President’s post vacant.

The elected candidate will assume office for a full five-year term from the date of swearing-in.

As per the ECI’s detailed schedule:

  • Notification will be issued on 7 August
  • The last date for filing nominations is 21 August
  • Scrutiny of nominations will take place on 22 August
  • The deadline for withdrawal of candidatures is 25 August
  • Polling (if required) will be held on 9 September between 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM
  • Counting of votes (if necessary) will also take place on the same day

The Vice President is chosen by an electoral college comprising members of both Houses of Parliament.

For the 2025 election, the electoral college includes 788 members: 233 elected and 12 nominated members from the Rajya Sabha, and 543 elected Lok Sabha members. However, due to current vacancies, only 782 members are eligible to vote.

The voting will follow the system of proportional representation by means of a single transferable vote and will be conducted through a secret ballot.

The Secretary General of the Rajya Sabha has been appointed as the Returning Officer for the poll.

Voting will take place in Room No. F-101, Vasudha, First Floor, Parliament House, New Delhi.

The Constitution mandates strict secrecy in Vice Presidential elections.

Open voting is not permitted, and electors are, however, barred from showing their marked ballots to anyone under any circumstances.
