Union Minister for Agriculture, Farmers Welfare, and Rural Development Shivraj Singh Chouhan is currently on an official visit to Brazil to attend the 15th Meeting of Agriculture Ministers of BRICS countries.
During his visit, he toured key agricultural institutions, including soybean production plants, tomato farms, and corn fields, gaining insights into Brazil’s advanced farming methods.
Shivraj Singh Chouhan Focuses On Soybean Sector Collaboration
While visiting a soybean processing facility, Chouhan emphasized the need to boost soybean production and processing in India.
He noted that although India currently imports soybean oil from Brazil, there is potential to establish soy processing units in India and become an exporter of soybean oil.
“We can work together with Brazil not just in soybean production, but also in processing technologies,” Chouhan said.
He praised Brazil’s nearly 100% mechanization in the agricultural sector and highlighted opportunities for collaboration.
Call For Seed Development And Research Ties
Chouhan reviewed mechanized cotton harvesting processes and stressed the need for joint research with the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) to develop better seed varieties.
He expressed interest in leveraging Brazil’s advancements in crop research to enhance India’s agricultural output.
Invitation To Brazilian Delegation For Agri Cooperation
To accelerate India’s agricultural growth, Chouhan invited a Brazilian delegation to India. “I’ve extended an invitation for them to explore collaboration opportunities. India will provide full support,” he said.
He also underlined the importance of strengthening trade, technology exchange, and joint ventures between the two nations.
Insights From Tomato And Corn Farms
Accompanied by Brazil’s Agriculture Minister, Chouhan visited large-scale tomato farms and observed corn cultivation practices. He was particularly impressed with the 22 tonnes per hectare corn yield, calling it ‘surprising and exemplary’.
Shivraj Singh observed that Brazil uses highly mechanized irrigation systems, including precision sprinklers and nutrient-fed water lines. He noted how urea-mixed water is delivered through pipelines, ensuring precise and efficient irrigation using rainwater harvesting tanks.
“This entire setup is fully controlled and ensures optimal water usage,” he said.
Union Minister Shivraj Gives Lessons For Indian Farming
Chouhan stated that the visit helped him understand how to modernize Indian agriculture.
“I’ve seen firsthand how Brazil integrates mechanization and smart irrigation. We can implement similar practices to boost productivity in India,” he said.
Shared Vision Of Global Food Security
Reaffirming India’s global agricultural vision, Chouhan said, “India has always believed in ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’—the world is one family. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, we have ensured food security and are exporting to several countries.”
He emphasized that India and Brazil can work together in areas such as mechanization, seed development, research, food processing, and sustainability.
“Together, we can contribute meaningfully to global food security and environmental protection,” he concluded.
