Union Cabinet Approves ‘Mission Mausam’ To Tackle Extreme Weather Events, Climate Change Impacts

The mission aims to advance India’s weather and climate-related science, research, and services

Modi Cabinet

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved ‘Mission Mausam’ on Wednesday. The mission aims to advance India’s weather and climate-related science, research, and services. It will help citizens and stakeholders tackle extreme weather events and climate change impacts.

With a budget of Rs 2,000 crore over two years, the Ministry of Earth Sciences will primarily implement the program. The mission aims to strengthen India’s capacity in weather surveillance, forecasting, and management using advanced technology.

Focus on Precision Weather Prediction

Mission Mausam will focus on improving weather observation and forecasting systems. The program will use next-generation radars, satellite systems, and high-performance supercomputers. The integration of AI, machine learning, and advanced sensors will enhance India’s ability to predict weather events with high accuracy.

The mission also aims to provide timely weather information, such as monsoon forecasts, cyclone alerts, and air quality updates. It will support sectors like agriculture, disaster management, aviation, and health by providing real-time data through a GIS-based automated Decision Support System.

Broad Benefits Across Sectors

Mission Mausam will benefit various sectors, including defence, power, tourism, and shipping. The program will enhance data-driven decision-making in urban planning, transport, and environmental monitoring. The India Meteorological Department, Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, and the National Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting will lead its implementation.

The mission will also involve collaborations with other national and international institutes. By improving India’s weather and climate science infrastructure, Mission Mausam will boost resilience against climate challenges and help safeguard communities and ecosystems.
