The Supreme Court has not granted any relief to Swami Shraddhanand, who is serving a life sentence for the murder of his wife, Shakira Khalili. The Court questioned Shraddhanand’s lawyer about the parole petition, asking whether he seeks to convert the life sentence into a death penalty.
The Court instructed the lawyer to consult with Shraddhanand and provide further details.
Swami Shraddhanand, 84, has been serving a life sentence since 1994 for killing Shakira Khalili. He had previously filed a parole petition in April last year, which the Court rejected.
Shraddhanand’s case gained attention in April last year when he appealed to the Supreme Court following the release of Nalini Sriharan, convicted in the Rajiv Gandhi murder case. However, the Court denied Shraddhanand’s request for parole.

Shakira Khalili, who was the granddaughter of former Diwan Sir Mirza Ismail of the Mysore royal family, was a prominent figure. Her murder attracted significant media attention. Shakira had divorced Indian Foreign Service officer Akbar Khalili and married Swami Shraddhanand, also known as Murali Manohar Mishra, in 1986. At that time, she owned property valued at Rs 600 crore and had four daughters. Despite her wealth and family, she married Shraddhanand in hopes of having a son, which led to estrangement from her daughters and other family members.
The Supreme Court’s continued scrutiny highlights the complex nature of the case and the ongoing legal battle over Shraddhanand’s sentence.
