Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Monday ended speculation over the Union Budget 2026-27. He confirmed that Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the Budget on February 1, even though the date falls on a Sunday.
The announcement brings clarity to Parliament’s legislative calendar and signals continuity in the government’s budgetary tradition.
The Speaker addressed a press conference and confirmed the schedule for the Union Budget. He stated that the Finance Minister will present the Budget at 11 AM in the Lok Sabha, following established parliamentary convention.
He responded to queries about the timing, noting that the House had resolved any ambiguity arising from the weekend schedule.
Parliament will convene for the Budget Session on January 28, launching a crucial phase of legislative and financial deliberations.
The session will continue until April 2. Lawmakers have scheduled the extended sitting to allow detailed debate on fiscal priorities and policy measures.
Earlier, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju outlined the session’s two-phase structure. He said the first phase will run from January 28 to February 13, after which Parliament will adjourn for a recess.
The second phase will commence on March 9 and continue until April 2.
Acting on the Union government’s recommendation, President Droupadi Murmu approved the summoning of both Houses for the Budget Session 2026.
The parliamentary calendar also reflects ceremonial and procedural considerations.
Parliament will observe a recess on January 29 to mark the Beating Retreat ceremony, and both Houses will convene on January 30 to table the Economic Survey.
Lawmakers will observe another break on January 31, a day ahead of the Budget presentation.
Parliament will complete discussions on the Motion of Thanks to the President’s Address and the initial Budget debates. It will then adjourn on February 13 for a nearly month-long recess.
It will reconvene on March 9 to continue detailed scrutiny of budgetary proposals.
Officials noted that Parliament usually adjourns on a Friday. They said the session may conclude a day earlier this year due to Good Friday on April 3.
With the schedule now confirmed, attention shifts to the substance of the Budget, which will shape India’s fiscal roadmap for 2026-27.
