After Uttarakhand’s historic move to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill, the state government of Rajasthan is also set to introduce the bill in the current or next session of the state assembly, following the footsteps of Uttarakhand, Rajasthan Minister Kanhaiya Lal Choudhary announced on Tuesday.
UCC bill aims to establish uniform civil laws for all citizens regardless of their religion.
Rajasthan minister praised Dhami
Mr. Choudhary also expressed admiration towards Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami for proposing the implementation of the bill.
“First of all, I would like to thank Uttarakhand CM Dhami. This was an important matter and the people of India were awaiting it. He initiated this bill. We are making an effort to ensure that Rajasthan becomes the second state after Uttarakhand (to implement the UCC Bill)…CM is in support of this. He has given directions for this, and work will be done soon. This will be discussed in the current session and if the time is insufficient, it will be brought up in the next session,” Rajasthan Minister Kanhaiya Lal Choudhary told ANI.
UCC bill’s implementation
The bill was tabled by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami at the Dehradun Assembly.
Uniform civil laws regarding marriage, divorce, succession, cohabitation, and other related topics are proposed in this bill.
After the Unifrom Civil Code Bill’s implementation, it will be mandatory for live-in relationships to be registered under the law.
According to UCC, all live-in relationships will have to be registered within a month from the date of entering into the relationship. Adult couples will be required to obtain consent from their parents.
A complete ban on child marriage and a uniform process for separation is mentioned in the bill. the bill further states women will get their rightful share in ancestral property regardless of any religious barrier.
