Tunnel Rescue Triumph
Following a 17-day operation, Arnold Dix, a prominent tunnelling expert, expressed his intention to return to the makeshift temple outside the Uttarakhand tunnel to express gratitude after the successful rescue of 41 trapped workers. Dix, president of the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association, lauded the rescue as a “miracle” and commended the collaborative efforts of the Indian engineering team.
In an interview with news agency, Dix recalled his earlier statement predicting the safe return of 41 individuals without harm by Christmas, noting the early realization of this optimistic outcome. He highlighted the calm approach, clear objectives, and the synergy within the team as key factors contributing to the mission’s success.

Stationed in Uttarkashi throughout the rescue operation, Dix, a professor and barrister, played a crucial role in assisting rescue teams and keeping the media informed of the operation’s progress. His swift response to the crisis garnered praise, emphasizing the significance of his contributions.
A widely circulated video captured Dix praying at the makeshift temple, expressing his gratitude for the miraculous outcome. He acknowledged the challenges faced during the operation, particularly in the tricky Himalayan terrain. Manual drilling by rat-hole mining experts became instrumental after a 25-tonne auger machine breakdown.

An Australian citizen, Dix received commendation from Australia’s High Commissioner to India, Philip Green, who praised the tunnel rescue operation as an “immense achievement.” Green specifically acknowledged Dix’s crucial technical support on the ground, highlighting the international collaboration in the successful mission.
