Trinamool Leader’s Comments On Protesting Doctors Spark Outrage

Controversial remarks by Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh regarding junior doctors protesting the recent rape and murder of their colleague at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital have ignited a significant uproar within West Bengal’s medical community.

Ghosh urged his party workers to compile a list of junior doctors stationed in various districts, alleging that many are neglecting their duties. “They only attend their scheduled hours briefly and then come to Kolkata for private practices,” he claimed. He further suggested that this list would be sent to the state government for potential disciplinary action.

In response, the West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front (WBJDF), which is leading the protests, condemned Ghosh’s comments as a tactic to divert public attention from their movement. A representative stated, “We have been advocating for infrastructure development in state-run medical colleges and hospitals. One key demand is the implementation of a biometric attendance system to accurately track attendance.”

Another junior doctor expressed concern that Ghosh’s statements are intended to incite public sentiment against the protesters. He described these remarks as part of the ongoing “threat culture” that has plagued medical institutions in the state.

“Attempts to distract from our justified demands will not succeed,” he asserted.

Manas Gumta, former general secretary of the Association of Health Service Doctors, criticized Ghosh for overstepping into administrative matters. “He is mistaken if he thinks we will be intimidated by such remarks,” Gumta said.

The situation continues to escalate as junior doctors maintain their protests, demanding necessary reforms and justice for their colleague.
