A 21-year-old woman from Kolhapur, Maharashtra, succumbed to rabies just three days after completing the anti-rabies vaccination regimen.

The woman, identified as Srishti Shinde, encountered a tragic incident on February 3 when she was bitten by a stray dog while passing through the Bhausingji Road. She had stopped to answer a phone call on her way to Shaniwar Peth when the dog attacked her and bit her leg.

Following the incident, Shinde diligently received all five doses of the anti-rabies vaccine as a precautionary measure. However, despite her proactive approach, she began experiencing symptoms days later, including fever and weakness in both legs.

Concerned about her deteriorating condition, Shinde’s family admitted her to a private hospital, where extensive tests were conducted. Unfortunately, her health continued to decline, prompting medical professionals to transfer her to a government hospital. Tragically, Shinde passed away the following day after the test results confirmed that she had contracted rabies.

Srishti Shinde’s untimely demise has sparked inquiries into the circumstances surrounding her contraction of rabies despite completing the vaccine regimen. Her family has raised questions about the storage conditions of the vaccine, speculating whether it was compromised due to inadequate temperature control.
