In Varanasi, a 12-year-old girl accompanied by her elder sister arrived at Assighat on Tuesday to bathe in the Ganges river. Unfortunately, she slipped and fell into deep water. Upon receiving the distressing news, the NDRF and Water Police teams swiftly responded, tirelessly working for four hours to retrieve the girl’s body from the Ganga. Witnessing the tragic scene, family members couldn’t contain their grief and began crying.

The girl, identified as Saloni Prajapati, a resident of Sarayanandan Khojwa in the Bhelupur police station area, had ventured to Assi Ghat in the morning with her elder sister Sunaina for their ritual bath in the sacred river. Opting for Assi Ghat due to its lower footfall, the sisters faced resistance from onlookers who discouraged them from bathing there. Despite the warnings, Saloni proceeded to bathe. Tragically, she slipped and drowned in the deep waters. Sunaina, witnessing her sister’s plight, raised an alarm, prompting sailors and bystanders to rush to their aid.

Despite their valiant efforts, they were unable to locate Saloni. Subsequently, the NDRF was informed, and two teams, along with divers, were dispatched to the scene. The search operation persisted for four gruelling hours before the girl’s body was finally recovered from the Ganges. Upon learning of the heartbreaking incident, family members also arrived at the spot, further intensifying the sorrowful atmosphere.
