The Election Commission of India rejected Rahul Gandhi’s voter deletion allegations, calling them baseless and incorrect.
The commission dismissed his charges regarding Karnataka’s Aland constituency, questioning Congress’s understanding of electoral procedures and democratic safeguards ensuring transparency.
Rahul Gandhi, during a press conference, alleged systematic voter deletions in Congress strongholds through fake logins and external phone numbers.
He claimed that officials deleted 6,018 votes in Aland and termed it an organised manipulation that threatened the fairness of India’s electoral democracy.
Responding swiftly, the ECI clarified that no voter deletion could occur online or by the public, contradicting Gandhi’s stated misconception.
Officials emphasised that every deletion requires a hearing opportunity for affected individuals, ensuring accountability, fairness, and strict procedural compliance.
The commission revealed that officials unsuccessfully tried to delete electors in Aland in 2023 and added that it filed an FIR under the ECI’s authority.
By highlighting the FIR, the ECI underlined its vigilance, proving its readiness to prevent manipulations undermining electoral rolls and credibility.
Interestingly, Gandhi’s ‘Congress stronghold’ claim regarding Aland overlooked that the BJP won in 2018, while Congress regained victory in 2023.
Political analysts observed that Gandhi’s fresh allegations will intensify political confrontation, especially as the Bihar elections approach highly competitive stages.
The BJP is expected to portray the Congress as deflecting attention and turning accountability pressures into rhetorical diversions.
Observers noted ECI’s quick rebuttal highlighted institutional independence, reassuring citizens about fairness in electoral roll management and voting rights protection.
Rahul Gandhi earlier alleged voter irregularities and claimed that officials added one lakh votes in Karnataka’s Mahadevpura constituency last month.
Analysts suggested repeated allegations could energise the Congress framework but also risk undermining confidence in institutions crucial for democratic consolidation.
With heightened political stakes, this controversy reflects ongoing friction between opposition rhetoric and institutional resilience safeguarding India’s democratic electoral foundations.
