Tensions Rise In Kolkata As ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ Protest Marches Toward Vidyasagar Setu

Tensions have intensified in Kolkata as the ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ protest rally, condemning the recent rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, reached the city’s outskirts.

The march, which started in Howrah, has now moved toward the Vidyasagar Setu, also known as the Second Hooghly Bridge, which links Howrah and Kolkata.

The Nabanna Secretariat, the seat of the West Bengal government located in Howrah, has been a focal point for the protests.

Riot police deployed tear gas and water cannons in Howrah to disperse crowds that had gathered on the Howrah Bridge, many of whom were waving the Indian flag and chanting slogans.

The protest has now reached Kolkata, where the situation has become increasingly volatile.

Clashes Erupt As Police Use Lathi-Charges & Water Cannons Against Protesters At Vidyasagar Setu

Demonstrators clashed with police near the barricades in front of the Police Training School (PTS) by the Vidyasagar Setu.

Police responded with lathi-charges and water cannons as protesters attempted to breach the barriers.

Reports indicate that several female protesters sustained injuries due to the police crackdown, while many of the agitators continued to stage sit-ins and shout slogans in defiance of the police efforts.

The ruling Trinamool Congress has alleged that the unauthorized protest aimed to incite unrest.

Clashes were also reported on Mahatma Gandhi Road, where confrontations between protesters and police led to further use of force, including lathi-charges and tear gas.

Protesters on Mahatma Gandhi Road vowed to continue their march despite the police response.

“We will move ahead, let the police do whatever they want. We are students and we want justice for the victim doctor at any cost,” one protester stated.

As the protest continued, several thousand people have reportedly advanced to Rani Rashmoni Road, heading toward Strand Road in central Kolkata.

Meanwhile, tensions remain high in Howrah, with incidents of stone-pelting reported and injuries sustained by police personnel, including a Rapid Action Force (RAF) jawan.

The situation remains fluid, with heightened security measures in place as the protestors’ movement continues to challenge the authorities.
