Tamil Nadu Records Over 84% Turnout In High-Stakes Assembly Elections

Tamil Nadu witnessed a high-stakes electoral contest on Thursday as polling across all 234 Assembly constituencies concluded with a robust turnout of over 84 per cent, underscoring strong public participation in one of the state’s most closely watched elections in recent years.

The election marked a departure from the traditional two-party dominance, evolving into a multi-cornered contest featuring the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance, the AIADMK-led NDA, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam led by Vijay, and Naam Tamilar Katchi headed by Seeman.

Voting began on a brisk note in the morning, with steady queues reported across urban and rural regions despite high temperatures. By 3 PM, turnout had already reached around 70 per cent, eventually rising to one of the highest participation levels in recent elections.

The ruling DMK, led by Chief Minister MK Stalin, is seeking a second consecutive term based on its governance and welfare initiatives.

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, under Edappadi K Palaniswami, is aiming for a comeback despite internal challenges, making the election crucial for its future.

TVK has contested all 234 seats, attempting to translate its popularity, particularly among youth, into electoral gains.

NTK has also fielded candidates across constituencies, focusing on Tamil nationalism, environmental concerns, and an alternative political narrative appealing to first-time voters.

Despite minor incidents of tension and logistical issues at a few polling booths, the process remained largely peaceful with strong security arrangements in place.

With over 5.7 crore voters participating, the election is set to shape the state’s political direction.

Results, scheduled for May 4, will determine whether the DMK retains power or new political forces alter the electoral landscape.
