Suspected Nipah Case In Kozhikode Sparks Containment Measures

Keralam health authorities have launched emergency containment measures after a 43-year-old man from Farook in Kozhikode tested positive for the Nipah virus, triggering fresh concerns over the deadly zoonotic disease.

The patient developed Nipah-like symptoms and is now in the isolation ward at Kozhikode Medical College Hospital.

The infection was detected through tests conducted at the Medical College laboratory, following which he was moved to a special isolation facility around midnight. His samples have also been sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune, for final confirmation.

The man, who worked in cleaning old buildings, may have contracted the virus while carrying out cleaning work at a structure with a heavy bat presence in Farook.

Health experts believe exposure to bat droppings or contaminated material may have led to the infection.

Authorities have initiated a large-scale contact tracing exercise after delays in identifying the illness raised concerns.

The patient initially sought treatment for a high fever but later developed serious symptoms, including confusion and behavioural changes.

Relatives reportedly attributed the symptoms to alcohol withdrawal, leading to his admission to a de-addiction centre. He remained there for several days before his condition worsened, prompting his transfer to a major private hospital.

The patient is likely to have interacted with several people during this period. They included inmates and staff at the centre, widening the potential contact list.

Officials are preparing a detailed movement chart and identifying all close contacts. They will keep the contacts under strict observation.

Kozhikode Medical College has tightened restrictions around the isolation ward. As part of infection-control measures, it has suspended entry to the SDS block, installed barricades and halted parking facilities nearby.

The latest case has also revived debate over Keralam’s preparedness for recurring Nipah outbreaks.

The absence of a dedicated advanced virus research facility in the state has sparked concerns. As a result, final confirmation of suspected cases still depends on laboratories outside Keralam.

Nipah virus can cause severe fever, breathing difficulties, vomiting, neurological complications and brain inflammation.

Symptoms may appear four to 14 days after exposure. Authorities have urged anyone who may have come into contact with the patient to remain vigilant while awaiting the final test report from Pune.
