The Supreme Court is likely to deliver its decision on Thursday regarding Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s bail request in connection with the ongoing corruption case tied to the alleged liquor policy scam.
A bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan will preside over the hearing.
Kejriwal’s petition challenges his arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and seeks bail in the matter.
His case comes amid a broader investigation that has also implicated other political figures, including senior AAP leader Manish Sisodia, BRS leader K Kavitha, and former AAP communication head Vijay Nair, who the apex court recently granted bail in the same excise policy probe.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader’s plea argues against his detention and remand orders, calling them unjustified.
CBI Opposes Kejriwal’s Plea; Alleges His Key Role In Excise Policy
However, the CBI has opposed the plea, asserting that Kejriwal is attempting to politicize the issue.
The agency claims that several courts have already found sufficient grounds to proceed with the case, as the offenses were serious enough to warrant attention.
In its affidavit, the CBI pointed out that although Kejriwal holds no specific ministerial role in the Delhi government, he guides all major decisions at both the state and party levels.
These include decisions related to the formulation of the contentious excise policy, which the agency claims Kejriwal orchestrated in collaboration with former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia.
The CBI further alleged that Kejriwal played a central role in shaping the new excise policy, which is at the heart of the corruption charges.
According to the agency, the investigation has revealed a deeper involvement of Kejriwal in key decisions that have raised legal concerns.
While Kejriwal was granted interim bail by the Supreme Court in a money laundering case filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in July, he remains in custody due to his arrest by the CBI in the liquor policy case.
Additionally, on Tuesday, a special court acknowledged the CBI’s charge sheet against Kejriwal and other accused individuals.
Special Judge Kaveri Baweja issued a production warrant for Kejriwal, extending his custody until 11 September, when the court is likely to hear further arguments on the case.
