On Friday, the Supreme Court will hear a significant petition filed by Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College & Hospital, contesting a Calcutta High Court directive for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into alleged financial irregularities during his tenure.

On 23 August, Justice Rajarshi Bhardwaj of the Calcutta High Court’s single-judge bench ordered the CBI to take over the investigation of the financial misconduct claims against Ghosh.

The court made this decision after Akhtar Ali, a former deputy medical superintendent at RG Kar, filed a petition. The court also directed it to monitor the investigation.

Ghosh, dissatisfied with this order, sought a review from the Calcutta High Court’s division bench, comprised of Justice Harish Tandon and Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharya.

The court advised him to obtain a copy of the single-judge bench’s order before addressing his request for an expedited hearing.

Instead of following this advice, Ghosh escalated the matter directly to the Supreme Court on Wednesday.

The CBI has already acted on the case, conducting raids on August 25 at multiple locations in Kolkata, including Ghosh’s residence.

On the evening of 2 September, the CBI’s economic offense wing detained Ghosh and three others.

A special court in Kolkata subsequently remanded them to eight days of CBI custody on 3 September.

The allegations against Ghosh involve various irregularities, including the awarding of contracts to favored private entities without proper approvals, bypassing standard public works procedures, and the illicit sale of biomedical waste, including post-mortem organs.

The Supreme Court’s review will be closely watched, given the high-profile nature of the case and its implications for accountability in public institutions.
