On Monday, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is likely to present its progress report in the pivotal hearing on the brutal rape and murder of a female doctor from RG Kar Medical College & Hospital. Chief Justice DY Chandrachud will lead the three-judge bench overseeing the case.
The court rescheduled the hearing from 5 September to Monday.
This case has garnered significant attention, with spontaneous protests erupting both within India and among the Indian diaspora abroad.
Demonstrators have condemned the horrific crime and alleged attempts by certain factions within the state administration and ruling party to cover up the incident.
Political analysts view the upcoming hearing as critical for two main reasons.
First, the contents of the CBI’s progress report; whether fully or partially disclosed could significantly influence both political discourse and public sentiment, which have been intensifying.
Second, the observations and rulings of the three-judge bench during the hearing will be pivotal.
Another key issue expected to arise is the Centre’s grievance regarding the state government’s failure to provide adequate infrastructure support to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel stationed at RG Kar Medical College as directed by the Supreme Court.
Legal experts suggest that if this issue is addressed, the bench may deliberate further on the matter, given the deployment was ordered by the same court.
On Sunday, the victim’s parents expressed their confidence in the ongoing protests, asserting that sustained public outcry is essential for securing justice for their daughter.
They also accused the Kolkata Police of mishandling evidence from the outset, further fueling the demand for transparency and accountability.
