In December last year, the Supreme Court took suo motu cognizance of the matter and stayed the High Court’s order, criticizing the remarks as “objectionable and unwanted”. The West Bengal government had filed a petition against the High Court’s October 18, 2023, decision.

The Calcutta High Court’s advice had sparked widespread controversy and outrage, with many arguing that it perpetuated harmful gender stereotypes and victim-blaming. The Supreme Court’s verdict tomorrow is expected to provide clarity on the matter and potentially set a precedent for future cases involving gender-sensitive issues.
