Supreme Court Takes Suo Motu Cognizance Of Kolkata Rape And Murder Case

The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognizance of the Kolkata rape and murder case involving a 31-year-old post-graduate trainee doctor. The case, recently transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) by the Calcutta High Court, will be heard on August 20 by a bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, alongside Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra.

Nationwide Protests Erupt Following Brutal Crime

The doctor was brutally raped and murdered inside a seminar hall at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. This shocking crime sparked nationwide protests, with doctors from across the country demanding swift action against those involved.

Following the incident, Kolkata Police arrested Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer associated with the police, in connection with the case. However, doctors raised concerns about the autopsy report, which indicated multiple injury marks on the victim’s body, suggesting the involvement of more than one perpetrator.

Calls for Action Against Key Figures in the Case

Protesting doctors are also calling for action against Sandeep Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Ghosh allegedly promoted a suicide theory regarding the case, which the doctors have contested.

On Saturday, Rajya Sabha MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) demanded that the CBI question Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal and Sandeep Ghosh. Roy has urged the CBI to conduct a fair investigation and to interrogate Ghosh and Goyal to uncover who propagated the suicide theory.

In response, the Kolkata Police summoned Roy on Sunday for allegedly spreading false information about the case. The parents of the deceased doctor claimed they were initially informed by phone on August 9 that their daughter had died by suicide at the hospital. The Kolkata Police Commissioner, however, denied that any such communication was made by the police.

Sandeep Ghosh has been questioned extensively by the CBI over the past few days, including Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The Calcutta High Court has already transferred the case to the CBI for further investigation.
