The Supreme Court has reprimanded the Delhi Municipal Corporation for failing to dispose of solid waste. The court has expressed grief and concern over the current situation in the capital. The Supreme court reprimanded the officials and stated that the situation regarding the disposal of solid waste is pathetic. The court will hear the case next on September 6. A bench of Justice AS Oka and Justice AG Masih is hearing the case.
The court noted that Delhi has more than 11,000 tons of solid waste every day, whereas the capacity of the MCD to dispose of waste every day is only 8,073 tons. Therefore, the court agrees that this can lead to a public health emergency. This is a sad situation regarding the implementation of the Solid Waste Management Rules 2016 in the capital city. The court directed the Secretary of the Union Environment Ministry to call a meeting of MCD and Delhi Government officials for an immediate resolution of the issue.
Waste disposal central to combat air pollution
In the last hearing, after studying the report of the Air Quality Management Commission on pollution in Delhi and its surrounding areas, the court had said that this is a serious issue. The court had emphasized that the issue of garbage disposal is very important for Delhi and that there should be no politics involved. The court had questioned what kind of signal we are giving to the world. We talk about development and the environment; what signal are we giving? The court has stated that until 2027, 3,800 tons of garbage will continue to be generated every day. This is a huge threat to the environment of the city.
