Supreme Court Registry Rejects Arvind Kejriwal’s Plea For Bail Extension On Medical Grounds

The Supreme Court registry has declined to accept an application submitted by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal seeking a seven-day extension of his interim bail for medical examinations, including a PET-CT scan.

Case So Far:

In light of ongoing general elections, the court has granted Kejriwal interim bail until 1 June in connection with a money laundering case associated with an alleged excise policy scam.

The apex court had instructed him to surrender back to Tihar Jail on 2 June.

According to the registry, the Supreme Court has already reserved its judgment on the matter, and it deemed the application for a seven-day extension unrelated to the main petition.

Since the court had permitted Kejriwal to seek regular bail from the trial court, it deemed the application not maintainable.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has highlighted concerns about Kejriwal’s deteriorating health since his arrest in the alleged Delhi excise scam.

They reported a weight loss of 7 kg and elevated ketone levels, indicating a serious medical condition.

The party asserted that medical tests were necessary, necessitating a seven-day period.

Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, representing Kejriwal, urged a vacation bench of Justices J K Maheshwari and K V Viswanathan to urgently consider the application.

Singhvi emphasized the urgency due to the imminent expiration of the 20-day interim bail window and the necessity for medical tests.

In response, Justice Maheshwari referred the matter to Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, stating that the decision should be made by the master of the roster.

The bench directed to place the application before CJI Chandrachud for “appropriate orders.”

The Supreme Court had previously reserved its verdict on Kejriwal’s petition challenging his arrest and subsequent remand by the federal anti-money laundering agency in the excise policy case.

It clarified that Kejriwal could seek regular bail from the trial court despite the pending judgment.
