A group of UGC-NET 2024 aspirants has filed a petition with the Supreme Court, contesting the recent cancellation of the examination due to alleged paper leaks.
The petition seeks urgent intervention from the apex court to halt the decision to conduct the exam afresh.
A bench led by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, along with Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, will hear the case on 12 August.
According to the petition, filed through advocate Rohit Kumar, the decision to cancel the UGC-NET 2024 was both arbitrary and unjust.
The petitioners argue that recent CBI findings show manipulation of evidence pointing to a paper leak, undermining the rationale for the cancellation.
The petition highlights the significant distress and financial burden caused to the aspirants, who have invested considerable time and resources in preparing for the exam.
It contends that the cancellation, based on purportedly falsified evidence, disrupts students’ academic and professional aspirations and erodes their confidence in the examination system.
The petition requests a stay on the August-September 2024 re-examination until the ongoing CBI investigation completes.
It also requests that the Supreme Court oversee a fast-tracked probe into the matter.
On 19 June, the Union Ministry of Education announced the cancellation of the UGC-NET 2024, which had been held a day earlier across various cities.
The ministry decided after discovering potential compromises in the examination process.
