Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has taken his legal battle to the Supreme Court, challenging his arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the alleged liquor policy scam.
In a special leave petition filed before the apex court, Kejriwal disputes the 5 August decision by the Delhi High Court that dismissed his plea against the CBI’s arrest and subsequent remand.
Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, representing Kejriwal, requested an urgent hearing from Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud on Monday.
Chief Justice Chandrachud directed Singhvi to email the court registry to facilitate a review of the matter.
The CJI assured that they would promptly examine the petition.
The Delhi High Court, in its recent ruling, found that the CBI’s arrest of Kejriwal was not without justification and upheld the legality of the detention.
The court is also likely to decide on Kejriwal’s bail plea, which it reserved on 29 July.
Earlier that day, the CBI submitted its charge sheet against Kejriwal and other accused individuals to a special court.
Additionally, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has filed a prosecution complaint in a related money laundering case, naming Kejriwal and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) as defendants.
On 12 July, the Supreme Court had granted Kejriwal interim bail in the ED’s money laundering case.
However, his release was thwarted by his subsequent arrest by the CBI.
The Delhi court has since extended Kejriwal’s judicial custody in the excise policy case until 20 August.
