On Thursday, the Supreme Court provided a reprieve to Omar Ansari, son of Mukhtar Ansari, by preventing his arrest in a criminal case related to the violation of the code of conduct during the 2022 assembly elections.
A notice has been issued to the Uttar Pradesh government by a bench comprising Justice Hrishikesh Roy and Justice PK Mishra in response to Omar Ansari’s petition, which challenges the order of the Allahabad High Court. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing Omar Ansari, contended that the primary accused in the case has been granted regular bail.
On December 19 of the previous year, the Allahabad High Court denied anticipatory bail to Omar Ansari, stating that, given the facts and circumstances surrounding the case, it appears that a crime has taken place. An FIR was filed on March 4, 2022, at Kotwali police station in Mau district against Abbas Ansari (SBSP candidate from Mau Sadar seat), Omar Ansari, and 150 unidentified individuals.

The FIR alleged that during a public meeting held at Paharpur Ground on March 3, 2022, Abbas Ansari, Omar Ansari, and organizer Mansoor Ahmed Ansari made objectionable remarks about the Mau administration. This incident is being investigated as a violation of the election code of conduct. The Allahabad High Court’s decision underscores the seriousness of the case.
