The Karnataka government confirmed on Wednesday that at least 11 people died and over 30 were injured in a stampede near the Chinnaswamy Stadium.
A massive crowd had gathered to celebrate Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) first-ever IPL trophy win.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced a ₹10 lakh compensation for each deceased’s family. The state has also ordered a magisterial probe into the tragedy.
Addressing a press conference, the CM said, “A big tragedy has happened during the victory celebration. Eleven people have died in the stampede incident, and 33 are injured.”
He further added that he visited Bowring and Vaidehi hospitals to meet the victims.
“This incident, during a moment of joy, deeply saddens me,” he added.
The CM stated that over one lakh people assembled in front of Vidhana Soudha, while the stadium, with a capacity of 35,000, saw nearly two to three lakh people.
Siddaramaiah stressed that the turnout exceeded all expectations.
“We anticipated a crowd slightly above capacity, but not this large. Most victims are young girls and boys,” he said.
The injured are receiving free treatment and are reportedly out of danger.
“I offer my prayers to the departed souls and their families. A magisterial inquiry will be conducted, and action taken against anyone found guilty,” he said.
Additionally, the CM instructed the officials to submit the report within 15 days.
When asked whether he was shielding officials by calling the incident ‘unexpected’, Siddaramaiah urged the media not to act like the opposition.
“Let us wait for the inquiry before playing politics,” he said.
The RCB celebration stampede has cast a shadow over what was meant to be a historic and joyous occasion.
