The Sri Adi Shankar Viman Mandapam temple, located on the banks of the Sangam, will be the focal point of the Maha Kumbh 2025. Known for its South Indian architectural style, the temple has become a significant pilgrimage site, drawing devotees from all over.
Historical Significance and Architectural Marvel
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath recently visited the temple to inspect the idols and oversee the ongoing development work surrounding the site. The temple is particularly notable for its historical significance; it is the site where Adi Shankaracharya reportedly engaged in dialogue with the philosopher Kumaril Bhatt.
The temple showcases stunning Dravidian architecture and has become a symbol of spiritual heritage.

Ramani Shastri, the temple manager, shared that the temple was built to fulfill the wish of Shankaracharya Swami Jayendra Saraswati, who was inspired by his guru, Chandrashekharendra Saraswati. The guru had spent Chaturmas in Prayag in 1934 and identified the site as a sacred location after witnessing its spiritual significance during his daily visits to the Sangam.
Construction and Features of the Temple
The foundation for the Sri Adi Shankar Viman Mandapam was laid in 1969 by then Uttar Pradesh Governor B. Gopal Reddy. The temple took 17 years to complete, with engineering led by B. Somo Sundaram and C.S. Ramachandra. The construction involved meticulous planning and collaboration with the Uttar Pradesh State Bridge Corporation.
Standing 130 feet tall, the temple features an idol of Sri Adi Shankaracharya and houses deities including Goddess Kamakshi, 51 Shaktipeeths, 108 Shivlingas, and images of Tirupati Balaji and Sahasra Yoga Linga. A Ganesha temple also graces the premises, making it a multi-faceted spiritual site. The temple remains open for darshan from 6 AM to 1 PM and 4 PM to 8 PM.

With its panoramic views of the Sangam from the upper floors, the Sri Adi Shankar Viman Mandapam attracts thousands of devotees daily. As Maha Kumbh approaches, officials anticipate that lakhs of pilgrims will visit to seek blessings and experience the temple’s spiritual ambiance.
The preparations underscore the temple’s vital role in the Kumbh Mela, highlighting its significance in the cultural and spiritual landscape of India.
