SpiceJet Q400 Loses Outer Wheel During Take-Off From Kandla; Lands Safely In Mumbai

A SpiceJet aircraft flying from Kandla in Gujarat to Mumbai reportedly lost one of its outer wheels during take-off but managed to land safely in the financial hub, the airline confirmed on Friday.

The Q400 aircraft reportedly lost the outer wheel shortly after leaving Kandla.

A SpiceJet spokesperson stated, “On September 12, an outer wheel of a SpiceJet Q400 aircraft operating from Kandla to Mumbai was found on the runway after take-off. The aircraft continued its journey to Mumbai and landed safely.”

After a safe touchdown, the plane made its way to the terminal under its own power, and the airline confirmed that all passengers disembarked without incident.

Separate Tailpipe Fire Incident at Delhi

This follows a separate incident on Thursday, when a Kathmandu-bound SpiceJet flight experienced a suspected tailpipe fire at Delhi airport but safely returned to the bay.

SpiceJet operated flight SG041 using a Boeing 737 8 aircraft.

The airline scheduled the flight to depart in the morning, but delays kept it on the ground for over four hours.

Another aircraft on the ground reported a suspected tailpipe fire, prompting the pilots to return as a precaution.

“No warnings or indications observed in the cockpit, but the pilots decided to return as a precautionary safety measure,” the airline said.

A tailpipe, the exhaust component of a jet engine, can experience an internal fire, also known as a tailpipe fire, within the engine’s normal gas flow.

Authorities confirmed that the aircraft was safe and cleared to resume operations after inspections.

On the financial front, the budget carrier posted a consolidated net loss of Rs 234 crore in Q1 FY26, compared with a net profit of Rs 158 crore in Q1 FY25.

Revenues from operations fell 34.4 per cent year-on-year to Rs 1,120 crore from Rs 1,708 crore, according to the airline’s stock exchange filing.

The airline attributed the losses to costs associated with grounded aircraft and expenses for returning them to service.

It also cited geopolitical tensions with a neighbouring country and airspace restrictions in key markets, which affected leisure travel demand.
