Climate activist and innovator Sonam Wangchuk is undergoing treatment at Safdarjung Hospital after doctors advised immediate medical attention during his ongoing hunger strike.
Delhi Police said medical specialists are keeping him under constant observation after examinations indicated weakness and dehydration caused by prolonged fasting.
Medical teams shifted Wangchuk to Safdarjung Hospital on the 21st day of his fast after concluding that he required hospital-based care.
The transfer took place amid protests and slogan-shouting by supporters gathered at the demonstration site.
Delhi Police said doctors visited the protest venue for Wangchuk’s scheduled daily examination in accordance with the Delhi High Court’s directions.
Officials added that some protesters interrupted the medical process, creating a brief disturbance before doctors recommended his hospital admission.
Following a detailed examination, doctors concluded that Wangchuk had become physically weak and was suffering from dehydration due to his prolonged fast.
Police said he remains under medical observation, while specialists continue carrying out additional diagnostic tests.
Medical Update
Safdarjung Hospital confirmed that Wangchuk was admitted at 07:40 AM. The hospital stated that although his condition is currently stable, he requires continuous monitoring and treatment to help restore his normal health parameters.
Earlier this week, the Delhi High Court directed authorities to conduct daily medical evaluations of Wangchuk.
The Delhi High Court emphasised that authorities must protect every citizen’s life and directed the Centre to provide Wangchuk with all necessary medical assistance.
Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali J Angmo, urged doctors not to administer any oral medication or intravenous treatment without obtaining consent from his family and his long-term medical team.
Wangchuk launched his hunger strike demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the alleged irregularities in the NEET examination. He has also announced a march from Jantar Mantar to Parliament House on 20 July, the opening day of the Monsoon Session, to press for the fulfilment of his demand.
