Sonam Wangchuk Hospitalised After Health Worsens During 20-Day Hunger Strike

Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk began receiving hospital treatment on Saturday after his health deteriorated during a 20-day hunger strike at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar.

Delhi Police shifted him to hospital on expert medical advice and in compliance with Delhi High Court directions.

Supporters of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), which is demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the alleged NEET examination irregularities and wider education reforms, protested as police escorted Wangchuk from the site.

Police said some protesters briefly tried to obstruct the transfer, but officers completed the operation peacefully while exercising maximum restraint.

The action came ahead of a scheduled Delhi High Court hearing on Wangchuk’s health.

The court had earlier ordered daily medical assessments and directed authorities to ensure all necessary treatment.

Doctors had declared his condition a medical emergency, warning of a possible risk of organ failure.

According to daily health bulletins, the 59-year-old activist had lost more than eight kilograms since beginning his indefinite fast, with his condition deteriorating steadily over the past several days.

In recent days, several Opposition leaders, including Congress leader Pawan Khera, Samajwadi Party MP Dimple Yadav and Aam Aadmi Party national convener Arvind Kejriwal, visited Wangchuk at the protest site and urged him to end his fast in view of his declining health.

Protesters have announced a march to Parliament on the opening day of the Monsoon Session on 20 July and appealed to political parties to join their demonstration.
