Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in the ‘Shaurya Yatra’ at Somnath Temple on Sunday as part of the Somnath Swabhiman Parv in Gujarat.
The ceremonial procession honours warriors who sacrificed their lives defending the temple over centuries.
As the rhythm of the ‘Damru’, associated with Lord Shiva, filled the air, PM Modi was warmly welcomed by large crowds lining the roads.
Devotees showered flowers and chanted ‘Modi-Modi’ as the Prime Minister progressed along the yatra.
He even held the Damru in both hands, raising it and flicking his wrists as part of the celebrations.
Artists from Rajasthan, Punjab, Manipur, Gujarat and other states performed traditional dances and music along the route.
Speaking to IANS, several performers expressed excitement at meeting the Prime Minister and participating in such a historic event.
A total of 108 horses escorted the Prime Minister’s convoy, drawing significant attention from the crowds.
Following the yatra, PM Modi offered prayers at the Somnath Temple and later addressed a public gathering at Sadbhavna Maidan.
In the afternoon, he travelled to Rajkot to inaugurate a trade show and exhibition at Marwari University as part of the Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference, and later inaugurated the conference for Kutch and Saurashtra.
He then reached Gandhinagar to launch Phase 2 of the Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project, connecting Sector 10A to Mahatma Mandir.
The Somnath Swabhiman Parv celebrates the temple’s enduring legacy of India’s civilisational courage, spiritual strength, and repeated reconstruction despite centuries of invasions.
This year also marks 75 years since the modern reconstruction of the temple, inaugurated in 1951 by then President Dr Rajendra Prasad, following efforts led by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel after Independence.
