Snow Leopards Spotted In Kistwar – Jammu And Kashmir

Cold desert region of Ladakh is home to snow leopards and this rare specie can  also be found in the high reaches of Kishtwar that touches Kargil and Himachal Pradesh.

A good news for wildlife enthusiasts. Snow Leopards have been spotted in Kistwar district of Jammu and Kashmir. Wildlife protection department of Jammu and Kashmir has posted two pictures of snow leopards on X. They were captured by camera in Kishtwar’s Kiyar Nullah.

One of those two pictures depict a snow leopard standing on a rocky surface . This picture was shot on October 1 at 02 :15 P.M. While the  other depict snow leopard roaming on green mountain area. This was shot on September 20 at 11 :47 AM. In India, the snow leopard, which the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has categorized as a vulnerable  species, is granted the highest level of protection under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. Hunting or poaching  may result  a  jail sentence for 3-7 years.

It should be taken into account that  the cold desert region of Ladakh is home to snow leopards and this rare specie can  also be found in the high reaches of Kishtwar that touches Kargil and Himachal Pradesh.

Earlier this year, a research team of  wildlife department confirmed the presence of snow leopards in Kishtwar High-Altitude National Park through camera-trapping. The camera traps installed before snowfall in the national park were retrieved and multiple images of snow leopards were captured in the frames.
