Police on Wednesday said a bus carrying devotees met with an accident in Punjab’s Fatehgarh Sahib, leaving at least six people dead and about 20 others injured. The vehicle had been on its way back from Anandpur Sahib when it overturned.
The incident occurred late Tuesday night near Himmatpura on the Morinda–Chunni road in the Bassi Pathana area.
The bus was carrying nearly 40 passengers who were returning from Anandpur Sahib after offering prayers on the occasion of Baisakhi.
According to Senior Superintendent of Police Shubham Agarwal, the vehicle is likely to have developed a mechanical problem during the journey.
Preliminary findings suggest the driver lost control, causing the bus to crash into an electric pole before overturning.
Several of the injured, including women and children, were taken to nearby hospitals in Morinda and Fatehgarh Sahib for treatment. Doctors have referred those in critical condition to PGIMER in Chandigarh.
Local residents were among the first to respond, assisting in rescue efforts before emergency teams and police personnel arrived at the scene.
Authorities have launched an investigation to establish the exact sequence of events leading to the accident.
Shiromani Akali Dal MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal expressed grief over the loss of lives and wished a speedy recovery for those injured.
