Jammu city plunged into darkness late Friday after loud blasts rocked the region. Authorities triggered emergency sirens and urged people to stay indoors. The explosions came just days after India launched Operation Sindoor. Indian drones had struck terror bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
Officials said cross-border shelling from Pakistan likely caused the blasts. The move appeared to be a response to India’s earlier strikes. Panic quickly spread through Jammu. People ran for cover as blasts echoed across the city.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah took to social media platform X to update residents. “Intermittent sounds of blasts, probably heavy artillery, can now be heard from where I am,” he posted. He also shared a photo of the city blacked out, writing, “Blackout in Jammu now. Sirens can be heard across the city.” His post went viral. He asked citizens to stay indoors and avoid spreading rumours.
On Friday, CM Abdullah reached Jammu city. He reviewed the damage from Pakistan’s failed drone and missile attacks on Thursday. He visited the government medical college hospital. There, he checked on the injured. Later, he went to camps set up for those moved from border areas.
Meanwhile, Pakistan started heavy mortar shelling in the Jammu and Samba sectors. Blasts continued through the night. Officials still don’t know if they came from artillery or drones. The Indian Army reported drone sightings in Jammu, Samba, and Pathankot. Troops activated air defence systems and started engaging the drones. Sirens also rang in Srinagar, causing more panic.
Security forces now guard key points across Jammu. Authorities added checkpoints and launched aerial surveillance. Drones are scanning the skies for further threats. No casualties have been reported yet. Still, fear hangs heavy over the city. Shops shut early. Public transport stopped. Life has come to a sudden standstill.
Earlier that day, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha visited forward posts near the Line of Control. He met soldiers stationed in Baramulla and Uri. “How is the Josh?” he asked. “High, Saheb!” the troops shouted back.
Sinha praised their bravery, saying soldiers stood ready to destroy the enemy and defend Bharat. He blamed Pakistan-backed terrorists for the Pahalgam attack. He said Operation Sindoor had destroyed those responsible.
