A bust of Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee was vandalised in Kolkata on Sunday, a day before Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit to the city for the leader’s 125th birth anniversary celebrations, police said.
The incident took place on Sukea Street in central Kolkata, where police found the lower portion of the altar supporting the bust damaged.
Workers, who had installed the name plaque on Saturday night, discovered it broken on Sunday morning.
Police have launched an investigation into the incident, which reportedly occurred after midnight. Officers are reviewing CCTV footage from the area to identify those responsible.
The BJP strongly condemned the vandalism, while the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha lodged a complaint at Amherst Police Station.
State BJP leaders are likely to unveil the newly installed bust on Monday as part of Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee’s 125th birth anniversary commemorations.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah will likely arrive in Kolkata on Monday to participate in the celebrations.
Amit Shah’s Kolkata Itinerary
According to the BJP, Shah will land at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport at 03:50 PM before heading directly to Mookerjee’s residence in Bhowanipore to pay floral tributes.
The Minister will then travel to Eco Park at 04:50 PM to lay the foundation stone for a 125-foot statue of Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee.
Later, Shah will attend the main birth anniversary programme at Biswa Bangla Mela Prangan at 05:30 PM.
West Bengal CM Suvendu Adhikari will likely join him at the event before he returns to Delhi.
The BJP has also scheduled several programmes at its state headquarters on Muralidhar Sen Lane to mark the occasion.
Calling it a historic day for the party, West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya said Amit Shah’s participation in the celebrations would make the birth anniversary especially significant for party workers across the state.
