Leaders from across the political spectrum expressed profound grief over the demise of Padma Vibhushan awardee and legendary Pandavani singer Teejan Bai, remembering her as one of India’s greatest folk artists who took Chhattisgarh’s cultural heritage to audiences around the world.

President Droupadi Murmu described her passing as deeply heartbreaking, saying Teejan Bai brought the stories of the Mahabharata to life through her powerful voice, commanding stage presence and distinctive style.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid tribute, calling her death an irreplaceable loss to the world of art and culture. He said her remarkable performances gave Pandavani a unique global identity and extended his condolences to her family, admirers and the artistic community.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah described her demise as an irreparable loss to the world of art, praising her lifelong commitment to preserving and promoting the Pandavani folk tradition.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai visited AIIMS Raipur to pay his final respects and announced that the state would perform her last rites with full state honours.

Teejan Bai passed away at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Raipur early on Sunday after battling a prolonged illness. She had been undergoing treatment since 27 May for a severe lung infection, sepsis and acute kidney injury.

Hospital officials confirmed that she breathed her last at 3:15 AM.

Born in 1956 in Ganiyari village near Bhilai, the 70-year-old folk icon transformed Pandavani into an internationally recognised art form. During her distinguished career, she received the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for her outstanding contribution to Indian folk culture.
