Shashi Tharoor lauds the G20 Summit
Getting everyone to agree on the G20 declaration wasn’t simple. Amitabh Kant, the sherpa for India at the G20, that nearly 200 hours of “non-stop negotiations” were necessary to achieve a consensus among G20 leaders who disagreed on how the group should respond to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.
India was able to establish consensus through a series of tough talks with China, Russia, and other important Western players, as well as with the support of Brazil, South Africa, and Indonesia. According to reports, on Friday night, India distributed the final document to the G20 members, warning them that if they did not accept it, there would be no proclamation.
According to Kant, who confirmed the historic milestone, the New Delhi Declaration was the outcome of numerous rounds of negotiations, and agreement wasn’t reached until late Friday night.
The diplomatic team, which included joint secretaries K. Nagraj Naidu and Eenam Gambhir, held 300 bilateral meetings and shared 15 drafts with their counterparts to forge an agreement that was reached on the first day.
“Bringing unanimity on the geopolitical paras (Russia and Ukraine) was the most difficult aspect of the entire G20. 300 bilateral sessions, 200 hours of non-stop negotiations, and 15 drafts were used to do this, according to Kant.

Congratulations, @amitabhk87! It appears that when you chose the IAS, the IFS lost an excellent diplomat! ‘Negotiated with Russia and China, and just last night got a final draft,’ says India’s G20 Sherpa on the ‘Delhi Declaration’ accord, Tharoor posted on X (formerly Twitter).
Additionally, Tharoor called it a “proud moment for India at the G20!”
