Shashi Tharoor, Congress leader and MP for Thiruvananthapuram, has urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah to officially classify the recent landslides in Kerala’s Wayanad district as a ‘Calamity of Serious Nature’.
This declaration, Tharoor argues, would enable Members of Parliament to allocate up to Rs 1 crore from their MPLAD funds to aid the affected areas.
In a letter addressed to the Home Minister on Wednesday, Tharoor emphasized that such a classification would significantly bolster ongoing rescue, relief, and rehabilitation efforts in the region.
The Wayanad district has been devastated by a series of severe landslides, resulting in over 264 deaths and leaving approximately 200 individuals still unaccounted for.
The catastrophic events have severely injured many others, who are currently receiving treatment in hospitals.
Tharoor described the disaster as unimaginable in its proportions, underscoring the profound impact it has had on the local community.
He commended the ongoing rescue operations, which involve the armed forces, the Coast Guard, the National Disaster Response Force, and other agencies battling the harsh natural conditions.
The Thiruvananthapuram MP called for a comprehensive and generous response from all sectors of society to address the scale of the calamity.
He stressed the critical importance of extending every possible support to Wayanad’s residents, noting that the magnitude of the disaster necessitates a unified and robust effort.
