SC Lawyer Urges CJI To Take Suo Motu Action in Rape and Murder of Calcutta Doctor

New Delhi, August 16: The brutal rape and murder of a young female doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Calcutta have drawn national attention, leading to a petition filed with the Chief Justice of India (CJI) in the Supreme Court. Supreme Court advocate Ujjwal Gaur has addressed a letter petition to CJI Justice DY Chandrachud, urging immediate intervention and requesting the court to take suo motu cognizance of the case.

The lawyer emphasized that the incident not only violates the victim’s right to life but also strikes at the core values of justice and humanity upheld by the Indian Constitution. The petition underlines the severity of the crime, stating that the nation’s collective conscience has been deeply shaken by the barbaric act committed within the very premises where the victim served humanity.

Attack on Constitutional Ideals and Justice

In his letter, Gaur argued that the incident is more than a heinous crime; it is an attack on the ideals enshrined in the Constitution. He pointed out that the doctor was fulfilling her duty to serve society when she was brutally raped and murdered. The petition appeals to the CJI to recognize the gravity of the case, describing it as a matter that goes beyond an individual tragedy and impacts the moral fabric of the nation.

Gaur’s petition further highlighted that the young doctor’s life was cut short in a place meant for healing and care, turning it into a site of unimaginable horror. The advocate stressed the importance of immediate judicial intervention to ensure justice is served swiftly and fairly.

Demand for Justice and National Accountability

The letter petition calls for the Supreme Court’s urgent attention, stressing that such crimes must not be viewed merely as isolated incidents but as serious threats to national integrity and societal values. Gaur urged the court to treat this case as a matter of national importance and ensure that the guilty are held accountable without delay.

The case has already caused widespread outrage across the country, with demands for justice growing louder. The petition is now awaiting consideration by the CJI, who may decide to initiate proceedings based on the letter’s plea.
