New Delhi: The Delhi High Court has amended its order regarding the deaths of 14 people at Asha Kiran Ashray Grih in Rohini, Delhi. The court has ordered the transfer of all foreign prisoners from Asha Kiran Ashray Grih to FRRO Shahjahanabad. It has directed the FRRO of the Home Department and Delhi Police to cooperate with the Social Welfare Department and GNCDT to complete the transfer within a week.
Overcrowding and Court Directives
The court made this amendment after the Delhi government filed a petition requesting a change in the previous order. The court had previously noted that Asha Kiran Ashray Grih, with a capacity of 570, currently houses 928 people. It directed the transfer of prisoners exceeding this capacity.
The court had also expressed concerns about a shortage of medical and non-medical staff. It instructed the Social Welfare Secretary to personally monitor the situation and visit the Asha Kiran Center. The court emphasized that if overcrowding continued, the residents should be moved to better facilities.
During the hearing, the court learned that most of the deceased women had suffered from TB. In July, 14 people, including a child, died at Asha Kiran Ashray Grih. The center currently houses 980 mentally ill individuals, including children and women. Data shows that 25 people have died there since February.
