The government has appointed Revenue Secretary Sanjay Malhotra as the next Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor for three years. The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) issued the notification on December 9. Malhotra will take over from Shaktikanta Das on December 11.

Malhotra, a 1990-batch IAS officer of the Rajasthan cadre, holds a degree from IIT-Kanpur and a master’s in public policy from Princeton University.

Key Roles in Revenue and GST

As Revenue Secretary, Malhotra boosted tax collections and managed the GST framework. He served as the ex-officio Secretary to the GST Council and handled states’ expectations on tax reforms. He also led reforms at REC as its Chairman and Managing Director.

Reactions to Malhotra’s Appointment

Former Statistician Pronab Sen called the appointment “a little surprising but not entirely unexpected.” Rajnish Kumar, ex-SBI Chairman, said Malhotra’s experience matches that of previous RBI Governors with Finance Ministry backgrounds.

Malhotra will now lead RBI’s monetary policies and oversee crucial fiscal decisions. His expertise in finance and public policy will shape India’s economic future.
