Samvatsari 2026: PM Modi Extends Greetings To Svetambara Jain Community, Says Forgiveness Strengthens Every Bond

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday extended greetings to members of the Svetambara Jain community on the sacred occasion of Samvatsari, highlighting the importance of forgiveness, compassion, humility and goodwill in strengthening relationships.

In a post on X, PM Modi said Samvatsari reminds people that forgiveness and compassion strengthen every bond. He expressed hope that humility would guide people and kindness and goodwill shape their actions, concluding with the traditional greeting, ‘Michhami Dukkadam’.

Samvatsari marks the final and most sacred day of the Paryushan festival, primarily observed by the Svetambara sect of Jainism.

The occasion focuses on introspection, repentance and seeking forgiveness for mistakes committed knowingly or unknowingly during the past year.

The occasion holds deep spiritual significance for Jains, who undertake an annual period of reflection and review their conduct over the preceding year.

Devotees acknowledge their mistakes, seek forgiveness for broken vows and repent for any wrongdoing.

The practice reflects the Jain belief that forgiveness helps people overcome negative emotions and move towards spiritual purification.

Samvatsari embodies key Jain principles, including ahimsa, or non-violence, universal friendship and compassion.

The observance encourages devotees to let go of anger, ego, resentment and animosity while reflecting on their behaviour and seeking personal improvement.

Samvatsari falls on Bhadrapada Shukla Panchami according to the Jain calendar and is marked by prayers, introspection and the exchange of  ‘Michhami Dukkadam’.

While Svetambara Jains observe Samvatsari at the conclusion of Paryushan, the Digambara community observes Kshamavani as its corresponding day of forgiveness. It follows the ten-day Das Lakshan Parva and similarly emphasises repentance, forgiveness, compassion and goodwill towards all living beings.
