Following External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s outreach to his Iranian counterpart, Amir Abdollahian, Iran’s foreign ministry announced on Monday that Indian government officials would be permitted to meet the 17 Indian crew members aboard an Israel-linked cargo ship seized by Iran. The assurance comes amidst growing concerns over the crew’s well-being after the vessel’s capture.
Jaishankar’s Dialogue with Iranian Counterpart
In a statement, the Iranian foreign ministry disclosed that Minister Jaishankar had expressed concern over the situation and requested assistance. In response, Dr. Amir Abdollahian assured that Iran was actively monitoring the situation and would facilitate a meeting between Indian officials and the crew members soon.
India’s Diplomatic Efforts and Call for Restraint
India has been engaged in continuous dialogue with Iran since the ship’s seizure on Saturday, aiming to secure the prompt release of the crew members. Minister Jaishankar emphasized the importance of de-escalation and restraint amidst escalating tensions between Israel and Iran.
In a social media post, Minister Jaishankar reiterated his discussions with FM Amirabdolahian and emphasized the need for avoiding further escalation, exercising restraint, and prioritizing diplomatic solutions. Both ministers agreed to maintain communication on the matter.

Escalating Hostilities in the Region
The recent events come against the backdrop of heightened tensions between Israel and Iran, with Iran’s direct attack on Israel being reported for the first time. This attack, involving hundreds of drones and missiles, follows Israeli strikes on Iran’s consulate in Syria, which resulted in casualties.
