RG Kar Case: Kolkata Junior Doctors’ Fast-Unto-Death Protest Enters Fourth Day

The fast-unto-death protest by seven junior doctors in Kolkata, triggered by the tragic rape and murder of their colleague at RG Kar Medical College Hospital, has entered its fourth day.

As the protest coincides with Maha Panchami on Tuesday, both junior and senior doctors have planned a series of demonstrations to amplify their demands for justice.

The seven doctors remain steadfast at Esplanade in central Kolkata, while junior doctors statewide have initiated a token hunger strike, lasting 12 hours from 9 AM Tuesday.

In a show of unity, senior doctors and representatives from nursing and health worker organizations have pledged their support, participating in this collective protest.

In addition to the hunger strike, organizers have scheduled a major rally for Tuesday afternoon at 4:30 PM.

The march will commence at College Square and proceed to the fast-unto-death site at Esplanade, with participation likely from all segments of the medical community.

Junior Doctors Urge Public Support For 12-Hour Hunger Strike & Rally, Highlighting Community Involvement

Junior doctors have called on the public to join them in their 12-hour hunger strike and the rally, emphasizing the importance of community support in their movement.

A representative from the West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Forum (WBJDF), the organization leading the protest, expressed gratitude for the widespread public backing, stating, “We had been able to carry forward our protests to this extent just because of the mass support from all sections of the society. So we are requesting the people, our biggest source of inspiration, to join us in this protest on Tuesday.”

The protest began on Saturday evening when six junior doctors initiated their hunger strike – three men and three women. A seventh colleague joined the fast on Sunday evening, underscoring the gravity of their cause.

While some protesters are dedicated to their hunger strike, others have returned to their medical duties, balancing their commitment to patient care with their demand for justice.
