Abdul Ghafoor Noorani, acclaimed scholar and jurist widely known as AG Noorani, passed away in Mumbai today at the age of 94. His death marks the end of an era for Indian and global intellectual circles.

Noorani, who had been in declining health, was actively working on a book about the Supreme Court’s Babri Masjid judgment until the end.
Despite his deteriorating condition, he remained dedicated to completing his manuscript, although it may remain unfinished.
Known for his extensive work on India’s relations with China and Pakistan, the Jammu and Kashmir conflict, and various other topics, Noorani however earned celebration for his comprehensive knowledge and deep analysis.
His works spanned from the Indian Constitution to British constitutional history, and he earned recognition for his detailed and often critical examination of political and legal issues.
A traditionalist in his approach, Noorani eschewed modern technology, preferring to conduct research through handwritten notes and personal interactions.
He meticulously collected official documents and engaged deeply with primary sources, demonstrating a relentless pursuit of truth and accuracy.
Noorani’s career also saw him as a legal practitioner, including his role as the lawyer for Sheikh Abdullah during his 1960s incarceration.
He was known for his critical stance against preventive detention laws and his robust defense of human rights.
