Rajya Sabha Adjourned Until March 9 As First Phase Of Budget Session Concludes

The Rajya Sabha adjourned proceedings on Friday until March 9, concluding the first phase of the ongoing Budget Session.

Earlier in the day, the Lok Sabha also suspended sittings. Both Houses of the Parliament of India have now entered a three-week recess.

During the final sitting, 27 approved Special Mentions were treated as laid on the Table of the House.

Members who were present had sought to raise urgent public matters through this procedural device.

Owing to time limitations and the close of the phase, the Chair formally recorded these submissions without discussion.

The intermission will allow Department-related Standing Committees to examine the Demands for Grants outlined in the Union Budget 2026-27, presented earlier in the session.

Committees will assess ministry-wise expenditure proposals, review policy priorities, and evaluate fiscal allocations. They will subsequently submit detailed reports to guide debate when Parliament reconvenes.

The first leg of the session, which began in late January, witnessed sharp exchanges and repeated disruptions.

Members clashed over an interim India–US trade arrangement. References to an unpublished memoir by former Army Chief MM Naravane triggered further contention.

Opposition parties staged protests on governance concerns, while procedural disagreements frequently stalled business.

Despite the strained atmosphere, the Lok Sabha advanced select legislative measures and cleared certain Bills.

The government defended its economic and security agenda. Opposition leaders pressed for accountability on fiscal management, national security, and agrarian distress.

The recess offers space for consultation, technical scrutiny, and political negotiation.

The second phase will prioritise detailed budget discussions, passage of appropriation legislation, and consideration of pending Bills.

Lawmakers aim to complete essential financial business before the close of the fiscal cycle.

Parliament will reconvene in March amid expectations of more structured deliberation and decisive action on key financial proposals.
