The special session of the 18th Lok Sabha started on Monday. On the second day, the newly elected MPs were sworn in, including Congress MP Rahul Gandhi. However, Rahul Gandhi made an unusual mistake. He brought a copy of the Constitution with him to take the oath and held it up to the ruling party during his swearing-in, which is not the standard procedure.
Rahul Gandhi, who represents Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh, was among several MPs taking their oaths. Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav, elected from Kannauj, and his wife, Dimple Yadav, the SP MP from Mainpuri, also took their oaths, both holding copies of the Constitution.

Other Samajwadi Party MPs, such as Mahendra Malik from Muzaffarnagar, Iqra Chaudhary from Kairana, Akshay Yadav from Firozabad, and Aditya Yadav from Badaun, also took their oaths. When it was Rahul Gandhi’s turn, opposition members, including those from Congress, greeted him with loud cheers and slogans.
After taking the oath, Rahul Gandhi shouted “Jai Hind, Jai Samvidhaan” and signed the register without initially meeting the President, as is customary. Fellow MPs reminded him of his mistake, so he turned back to meet the President. Congress members took this moment to chant “Jodo Jodo, Bharat Jodo.” Rahul Gandhi then congratulated Speaker Om Birla, who acknowledged his greetings. Many opposition members took their oaths holding copies of the Constitution.
