PM Modi Assures Syro-Malabar Bishops Of Support; Discusses Minority Welfare

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday met a delegation of senior bishops from the Syro-Malabar Church in New Delhi, assuring them of his support and emphasising his willingness to engage on matters concerning the Christian community.

Addressing the delegation led by Major Archbishop Mar Raphael Thattil, PM Modi remarked, “I am always at your service.”

The meeting also included Archbishop Mar Kuriakose Bharanikulangara of the Faridabad Archdiocese, along with other senior bishops representing the Church.

In Kerala, the Syro-Malabar Church holds the distinction of being the largest and most influential of the three Churches that owe allegiance to the Pope.

Observers described the Prime Minister’s interaction as cordial and constructive. He focused on the welfare of Christian minorities and their contribution to India’s social and developmental framework.

Inclusive Governance and Dialogue

Kerala BJP leaders, including State President and former Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar and party leader Shone George, attended the meeting.

Chandrasekhar told reporters that the discussion was primarily a courtesy call in which the bishops highlighted issues concerning micro-minority rights and community development.

“The Prime Minister listened attentively and assured the delegation that the government is open to dialogue on all issues,” Chandrasekhar said, adding that the BJP prioritises inclusive governance beyond religious considerations.

“We serve all citizens, and the rule of law will always prevail. The BJP remains a party of service,” he noted.

The delegation reportedly requested PM Modi’s support in inviting the Pope to India.

Sources indicated that the bishops appreciated the Prime Minister’s assurances. They expressed hope for continued collaboration in education, social welfare, and community initiatives.

The meeting reflects the growing engagement between faith-based institutions and national leadership. It highlights the evolving dialogue on minority welfare, social harmony, and participatory development in India.
