On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed outrage over the assassination attempt on Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico. He labeled it as a cowardly and dastardly act.

Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “Deeply shocked at the news of the shooting at Slovakia’s Prime Minister, H.E. Mr. Robert Fico. I strongly condemn this cowardly and dastardly act and wish PM Fico a speedy recovery. India stands in solidarity with the people of the Slovak Republic.”

On Wednesday, Slovak PM Robert Fico was critically wounded in the attack, prompting an international outcry.

Slovak Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estok characterized the attack as a politically motivated assassination attempt. He emphasized that post-presidential election sentiments rooted the assailant’s decision. Estok attributed the surge of social media hate as a contributing factor to the assault.

The incident unfolded in the aftermath of a government meeting in the town of Handlova, located approximately 150 kilometers northeast of the capital.

Eyewitnesses detailed how a 71-year-old man approached Fico and fired multiple shots, inflicting severe injuries.

The assailant, identified as a resident of the area, reportedly targeted Fico amidst a gathering of supporters.

The attack on Fico, a prominent figure in Slovakian politics, has raised concerns about the safety of public officials and the escalating nature of political tensions.

International leaders have echoed Prime Minister Modi’s sentiments. They have denounced the violence and emphasizing the need for unity in condemning such acts of aggression.
