Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on Friday following the death of celebrated organic farmer R Pappammal, a recipient of the Padma Shri Award. Pappammal passed away at the age of 109 in Coimbatore, suffering from age-related health issues.
In a heartfelt post on X, PM Modi stated, “Deeply pained by the passing away of Pappammal Ji. She made a mark in agriculture, especially organic farming. People admired her for her humility and kind nature. My thoughts are with her family and well-wishers. Om Shanti.”

Pappammal gained national attention when she attended the Global Millets Conference in New Delhi in March 2023, where she emphasized the importance of promoting millet cultivation and consumption for sustainable agriculture and healthy diets. During their meeting, PM Modi demonstrated his respect by bowing down to seek her blessings.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin also shared his condolences on X, saying, “I feel like I have lost one of my family members.”
Recognized as a pioneer in the field of agriculture, Pappammal was awarded the Padma Shri in 2021 for her efforts in promoting organic farming in India. For 45 years, she served on the farmers’ consultation committee at the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, influencing agricultural practices in the state.
Even at her advanced age, Pappammal continued to work in the fields, earning her reputation as one of the oldest active farmers until her passing on Friday. Many in the farming community and beyond will remember her contributions to sustainable agriculture and her dedication to her work.
