President Murmu Calls For Mass Energy Discipline; Hails India’s Green Leap

President Droupadi Murmu on Sunday delivered a strong national call for energy conservation, urging citizens to actively participate in India’s green transition while lauding the Centre for achieving clean energy commitments ahead of schedule. Addressing a gathering on the occasion of National Energy Conservation Day, the President positioned public participation as the cornerstone of India’s sustainable future.

President Murmu urged people to make energy conservation a daily habit rather than a symbolic gesture. She said disciplined energy use will ensure a cleaner environment, economic resilience, and a safer planet for future generations. She stressed that individual choices, when multiplied across society, can significantly accelerate India’s energy transition.

Highlighting the role of young Indians, the President emphasised that children and youth must remain at the heart of sustainability efforts. She said involving the next generation in climate-conscious behaviour will build long-term national capacity for responsible energy use.

“For India’s energy transition to succeed, participation from every citizen and every sector is essential,” Murmu said. She underlined that behavioural change and energy efficiency across industries, households, and institutions remain the most powerful tools in reducing emissions and conserving resources.

The President also acknowledged the government’s tangible progress in energy efficiency. She cited official data showing that during 2023-24 alone, India saved 53.60 million tonnes of oil equivalent energy through efficiency initiatives. She said these savings translated into significant economic gains and a substantial reduction in carbon dioxide emissions.

Calling it a landmark achievement, President Murmu said India has already fulfilled its clean energy commitments ahead of the global timeline. She described this progress as a major step towards decarbonisation and a clear signal of India’s leadership in global climate action.

Citizens Central To Transition

Murmu stressed that access to clean and affordable energy empowers communities by strengthening local economies and creating new opportunities. She said green energy extends beyond electricity generation and acts as a catalyst for inclusive development, innovation, and self-reliance.

She also highlighted the National Green Hydrogen Mission as a critical pillar of India’s energy strategy. The President said the mission aims to position India as a global hub for green hydrogen by using renewable energy technologies, while sharply reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

At the event, President Murmu presented the National Energy Conservation Awards 2025 to institutions and honoured schoolchildren with prizes from the National Painting Competition on Energy Conservation. She praised these initiatives for fostering awareness and innovation across generations.

On the global stage, Murmu said India’s early fulfilment of its nationally determined contributions has strengthened international momentum toward sustainable development and net-zero targets. She reaffirmed that India’s green journey reflects responsibility, ambition, and collective resolve.
